Since the dawn of time, we Filipinos have been blessed with good genetics. We have the capability and the tools to build an amazing physique rather quickly thanks to our forefathers who had to endure hard labor during the Spanish, Japanese and American occupation. As one of my closest college friends and football buddy used to say, “Slavery, as ugly as it sounds, has built the perfect genetic disposition to create the perfect athlete”.. referring to African Americans, he himself being one has rose through ths ranks of the NFL.
We might not have the same history as the African American culture but we sure are used to hard work. Just look at our country men that work in the docks as “kargadors”.. the phydical demands of their work has yielded a body that can be considered a work of art.. this is without proper training or nutrition. These individuals live on white rice and salted fish, if times are good, they might be graced by the occasional cuts of pork adobo.
If without proper nutrition and rest, these individuals could create a body deserving of a podium finish at any local bodybiilding competition, why can’t we all do it?
Our predecessors have already laid the foundation for us and all we have to do is commit to the sport. Our Filipino legends, Manny Cabigas, a 7 time Mr Philippines and Mr Universe; Roland Dantes, 3rd runner up in the 1969 Mr Universe going head to head against Arnold Schwarenegger and Roman Dondon Cortuna who slayed his fellow bodybuilders to claim the Mr Universe Title twice, have laid the groundwork for all of us to follow. If is our God given right to claim the throbe and show that we are indeed a contender.
Bodybuilding is the perfect sport for we are not at a disadvantage for not being tall. We have the genetics to build the physique worthy of competing in the world stage. We have the work ethic as displayed by our predecessors to endure the rigors of training and dieting… All we lack is the mindset and cooperation of everyone.
It is time to bind together our efforts and make this sport into something our fellow countrymen can be proud of. We have to stop hating and being jealous of each other’s achievements. We need to become an inspiration to everyone, someone this country can look up to.
Let us all join forces and build this sport into a major force so that our fellow athletes can turn this hobby into a career and make this nation proud.
